Drum tension rods are the threaded metal rods that hold the drumhead onto the drum shell and allow the drummer to adjust the tension of the drumhead. Typically, there are several tension rods spaced evenly around the circumference of the drum, and each tension rod is threaded into a lug attached to the drum shell.

By tightening or loosening the tension rods, the drummer can adjust the tension of the drumhead, which affects the sound of the drum. Tightening the tension rods increases the tension on the drumhead, which produces a higher-pitched, more resonant sound. Loosening the tension rods decreases the tension on the drumhead, which produces a lower-pitched, less resonant sound.
